Custom Designed Leather Clothing and Accessories by Lana Lee Yates
Beautifully Detailed, Custom Leather Clothing
Leather Artisan Lana Lee Yates has been creating unique leather clothing, boots and accessories since 1991 with a focus on quality and detail. All of Lana's hand stitched apparel, boots and other goods are fashioned after Western / Frontier style, Cowboy, or Native American Indian style garments from the past utilizing Lana's own design ideas. Lana fashions all her custom designs from quality deerskin, elk or buffalo leathers, with the suede or grain side out, according to the preference of the individual. Each item she creates, from hand stitched, full length deerskin dresses, to baby moccasins, is of heirloom quality...made to be enjoyed for a lifetime, and then passed on to the next generation of leather lovers.
Lana has always been interested in sewing and clothing construction. In high school she was known for creating and wearing her own designs constructed from denim with embroidered and leather trims, wood buttons and other design elements. Later she ventured into self employment doing custom sewing, as well as various clothing alterations for the public. Lana later became involved with the Mad Bomber Company making prototype hats of leather and fur from their designs, which are still featured in many catalogs. She has also produced women's clothing from custom designs provided by the designer/owner of Kollectible Kreations, a custom ladies clothing business. She learned well how to match plaids and add other details to garments while doing production work for this business.
Yet another sewing position as shop seamstress for Uniforms Plus allowed her to expand on her sewing abilities. There she learned about altering and repairing Fire and Police Department uniforms, adding numerous patches and sewing reflective tape on firemens coats and pants. Those were some of her many duties while employed there.
In 1991, Lana was approached by a member of the Cherokee tribe and owner of Two Feathers Trading Co., with a request to create a leather garment. With some forethought and determination, and working from her past knowledge of sewing fabric, she easily transitioned into leather garment construction. Now, she often has the ability to see a finished garment in her minds eye prior to its creation. From there, she just follows the blueprint. Over the years her designs and techniques have matured. She has learned from experience to use the right details and embellishments in the right places on her leather items to make them distinctly different from most of what is seen in the leather market today.
Lana has created everything from Wolf Capes to Wedding Dresses
and has many more design ideas yet to implement. Some of her past creations were made for clients in Canada, Europe, Australia and other foreign destinations.
Heirloom Quality Apparel for Weddings and Pow Wows
Lana creates handmade, fringed leather Mountain Man or Frontier / Western style shirts with matching leather pants, also known as Buckskins, Possibles bags and gun / rifle cases for the Black Powder or Rendezvous collector and dance regalia for the Pow Wow enthusiast. Lana's designs also include hand crafted, fringed leather vests, dresses, skirts, tops and shirts, leather jackets, leggings, loin cloths, fur hats, beaded chokers, and more. All of Lana's fringe is patiently hand cut, focusing on consistent width and straight cutting detail. Lana is extremely experienced in hand cutting fringe.
In all her garment and accessory designs, Lana consistently employs hand laced buckstitched accent details and whip stitched edges, often in a contrasting but complimentary color leather, to create a unique look with eye-catching appeal. She also hand cuts all her own lacing prior to constructing your garment. Her handbags feature 4-strand braided leather straps with deer antler tip closures, deer antler buttons and other embellishments which Lana also creates from deer antlers to use in her clothing designs. She also incorporates decorative items such as real bone hairpipe, glass Crow beads, brass beads, beaded Rosettes, beadwork strips, conchos, tin cones, abalone discs, and other items to create a one-of-a-kind look. Lana's garments, bags and boots are unique and her quality of craftsmanship is uncompromised.
Custom Crafted Moccasins and Boots for Adults and Children
Lana also makes various types of soft soled moccasins from baby and childrens sizes to adult slipper mocs and ankle style mocs. Her moccasin boots are available in ankle, mid calf and knee heights. Moccasins and boots are made mostly of elk or buffalo hide leathers. Lana takes extra care to insure a proper and comfortable fit. She also creates a special type of insole to make walking in soft soled mocs more comfortable and durable than just walking on a few layers of leather. She makes an extra effort to line the interior of her tall boots with soft Deerskin leather for more comfort. Lana will make a custom pair of moccasins for you using measurements you provide and a bare foot tracing. Then get ready for a real treat! You will truly enjoy how comfortable wearing custom fit moccasins can be.
Its a labor of love for Lana to create a custom designed garment, boots, handbag, or moccasins for a new or returning client. Lana finds it a gift and an inspiration to live near the beautiful Lost River Valley of West Virginia. She enjoys life in the mountains with the National Forest so close to her back door. Here she has found her niche in nature. Lana finds this natural, quiet and peaceful environment helps her to focus on creating her "distinctly detailed" garments, boots and accessories.
